Friends of the Shelter
Humane Society
Friends of the Shelter (FOS) volunteers work
closely with the Murray-Calloway Animal Shelter (which is operated by the Fiscal Court
of Calloway County and not the Humane Society) to find permanent homes
for dogs, cats, kittens and puppies. Humane Society volunteers take
photographs of shelter animals and post them for adoption on
Petfinder.com. Volunteers also post animals for adoption in the pet
supplies section of the local Wal-Mart.
Since the enormous number of animals
entering the shelter is many more than the number
of adopters, the shelter must euthanize so FOS volunteers pull as many
pets as possible from the shelter into the Humane Society's dog and cat
adoption programs. Volunteers also work to relocate animals into
reputable puppy and dog rescue organizations.
Friends of the Shelter added cat
cages in 2007 at the shelter and dog and cat veterinary funds were
established. Funds are used to spay or neuter some animals making them
more adoptable and to provide other veterinary care for the comfort of
the animals and to improve their chance to find a forever home.
The focus programs of Friends of the
Shelter, Petfinder.com, adoption programs and rescue placements, save
the lives of animals who find
themselves abandoned in the local shelter.
