Pet Assisted Background and Mission
Begun in the early 1980's, the animal-assisted therapy program’s goal
was to lift the spirits of the elderly patients/residents of local
nursing homes and long-term care facilities through interactions with
animals and caring volunteers. Soon the program expanded and now, in
addition to visiting the elderly, it brings humane education and
hands-on experience with animals to school, church and scouting groups,
civic organizations, or wherever the need may be.
The Pet Therapy Program welcomes volunteers of all ages without regard
to race, color, religion, gender or national origin. Participants need
not be members of the Humane Society, but all who participate in the
program are, and are seen to be, representatives of the Humane Society
of Calloway County and agree to abide by its policies and its spirit of
helpful compassion.
